It’s a fact: all babies cry. Actually, many cry so much that it can be quite difficult to figure out how to calm them down. You try feeding them, changing their diapers, holding and rocking them – but nothing seems to work. These situations can be quite frustrating for parents and babysitters. In fact, they have occasionally driven even the most loving adults to shake their wailing infants.
Shaking a child out of frustration, however, is not the solution to this problem. Doing so can cause the baby to suffer very serious brain and body trauma, known as shaken baby syndrome, that will affect the child’s growth and development. Because an infant’s muscles are not fully developed and their heads are relatively large, shaking such a youngster will cause the brain to be dangerously jostled about inside the cranium. It can suffer bruising, bleeding, or swelling that can cause permanent disorders like cerebral palsy or mental retardation.
If an infant is shaken hard enough, he or she may even suffer severe enough injuries to cause death. One out of every four shaken babies die from the damage done; the rest will require ongoing medical treatment and therapy.
